Every year millions of people and goods enter Canada, the overwhelming majority of which pose no threat. Nevertheless, the CBSA is required to perform examinations to ensure the safety and security of Canadians without unduly slowing the flow of people and goods crossing the border. Border Services Officers need the ability to inspect conveyances more easily and efficiently so they can interdict contraband and facilitate the trade of legitimate goods.

In summer 2017, the CBSA successfully commissioned its first Fixed-Site Large-Scale Imaging (FS-LSI) facility at the Pacific Highway port of entry. This technology enables rapid x-ray imaging of large and difficult-to-inspect conveyances, including transport trucks, tankers, RVs, and boats. The Science & Engineering and National Real Property and Accommodations Directorates, in coordination with the Program and Operation Branches, worked to make this valuable technology a reality on the Agency’s front line. FS-LSI implementation improves border security, which contributes to maintaining a prosperous economy that ultimately benefits the Canadian public.
